Large events require significant pre-planning, and the COVID-19 pandemic is causing uncertainty in the planning process. This includes #WACampMeeting where the current roster of speakers has organizational travel bans, permits for camping are not assured, and the timeline of allowed public gatherings is still unknown.
Instead of the traditional gathering in Auburn this June, Washington Conference has two new camp meeting plans: to present a virtual week of prayer from June 14-20 and to plan area convocations this fall as gatherings are allowed to meet once again.
Long before the coronavirus entered collective conversation, Washington Conference chose “Praying Continually” as the camp meeting theme for 2020. This theme is even more appropriate now with current public health concerns.
“We couldn’t have picked a more timely theme,” says Craig Carr, Washington Conference vice president for administration. “It’s a living reality. We sense the need of prayer more than ever.”
The vision for virtual week of prayer — with a new roster of speakers — is to feature evening times of worship to encourage the family of God in a time of needed prayer.
The area convocations in the fall will offer a time of spiritual growth, discipleship coaching, and community of faith connections.
“As a church family, our desire right now is to connect with one another,” Carr says. “We want to encourage church families to come together in a mini camp meeting experience.”
Conference leaders are also looking beyond 2020 for improving camp meeting plans.
“While we are pushing “pause” on our traditional gathering this year, this is a good time for us to evaluate what camp meeting could and should look like in the future,” says Doug Bing, Washington Conference president. “We’re asking ourselves, ‘How do we come back better than before?’ We are open to your ideas, suggestions, and continued prayers.”
For those who made pre-reservations for camp meeting lodging, Guest Services will soon be offering refunds or rollovers for 2021.
