Praying Continually:
A Week of Standing in the Gap

by Randy Maxwell, Washington Conference prayer ministries coordinator and Renton pastor

“Jesus told his disciples…that they should always pray and not give up,” (Luke 18:1). Paul agrees saying, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus,” (1 Thess. 5:16-18).

And Ellen White admonishes: “Among God’s people there should be at this time frequent seasons of sincere, earnest prayer. The mind should constantly be in a prayerful attitude….A chain of earnest, praying believers should encircle the world….We should hold convocations for prayer, asking the Lord to open the way for the truth to enter the strongholds where Satan has set up his throne, and dispel the shadow he has cast athwart the pathway of those whom he is seeking to deceive and destroy. We have the assurance, ‘The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much’ (James 5:16),” In Heavenly Places, p. 93.

An unbroken “chain” of praying believers “encircling the world.” Is there anything more urgently needed in our world right now?

Isaiah the prophet said, “Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey. The Lord looked and was displeased that there was no justice,” Isa. 59:15. But to make the situation worse, he goes on to say, “He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene.” Ezekiel echoed the Lord’s dismay by saying, “I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one,” Ezek. 22:30.

As God looks upon the earth today, may He find a chain of earnest, praying believers, standing in the gap on behalf of our church, nation and world.

That’s what this Virtual Camp Meeting Week of Prayer is all about—praying continually for God to break satanic strongholds and set captives free.

Each day will have a different prayer focus:

  • Those who mourn;
  • The fearful/persecuted;
  • First-responders;
  • The homeless;
  • Teachers/students;
  • The spiritually confused;
  • Wisdom, growth and revival.

You are invited to pray continually with us for the next seven days and beyond.

Pray for the nightly speakers and prepare your hearts even now for the sacred work of intercession God is calling you to.

When God looks for who’s standing in the gap, may He find you and me “On our knees in humility; on our feet in unity,” knowing that “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8:31)

Daily Prayer Focus

Sunday - Those who mourn

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matt. 5:4

Sunday's Prayer

"Lord, many are grieving a loss of some kind--loss of a job, health, a cherished dream, a loved one to Covid, Cancer, or accident. Others mourn the hatred and injustice tearing our country apart. We are literally exhausted and there seems to be no end to the tears. We cry out for your mercy and your comfort that has sustained us through difficult times before. Surround us with your unfailing love. Remind us that you alone are God, and that you hold us in the palm of your hand. Give us courage and strength to face the days ahead and strengthen us in the knowledge that we do not face this struggle alone. Amen."

Prayer Points

  • Pray for those who lost loved ones during this pandemic and experienced double heartache of not being with them at the end, or at their funeral.

  • Pray for our nation as we grieve the evils of racism and hate.

  • Pray for the compassion and empathy to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice.

Monday - The fearful/persecuted

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." 2 Tim. 1:7

Today's Prayer for the Fearful & Persecuted

"Lord, fear rules our streets and steals our joy. We are fed a diet of fear from the time we awaken until the time we go to sleep. Help us to reject the food of fear the world tries to feed us, and let us feast instead upon Your Word. Let us walk in faith and remember that when we are afraid, we will trust in you. Remember those who are persecuted for righteousness sake. Strengthen them with your presence and deliver them from evil. For you are our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Amen."

Prayer Points

  • Pray that fear won't prevent God's people from standing up for truth and justice even when it is costly to do so.

  • Pray for all who are being persecuted for their faith.

  • Pray that faith, not fear, rules in our church and conference committees.

Tuesday - First-responders

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." Matt. 5:7

Today's Prayer for First Responders

"Lord, bless all those who put their own lives on the line every day to keep the rest of us safe. Give protection to those who rush into harm's way while others run away from it. Protect not only their bodies, but their minds from the effects of constant exposure to trauma, and let them receive the appreciation due them for the work of rescue and healing they perform on a daily basis. Amen."

Prayer Points

  • Pray for protection and integrity for firefighters and police officers.

  • Pray for protection and strength for doctors, nurses, and health-care workers.

  • Pray for essential workers who must work during the pandemic.

  • Pray for the mental health of all.

    Wednesday - The homeless

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matt. 25:40

Today's Prayer for the Homeless

"Lord, the plight of the homeless seems to only get worse. Some are homeless by choice and others are homeless because of circumstances beyond their control. It doesn't matter to You because You love them all the same. Help us not to judge before we help. Give us compassion and the courage to not only to pray for them, but to provide resources, food, or clothing to make their situation a little better. Break the chains of addiction and mental illness, and provide a living wage for them so they can afford a roof over their heads. Amen."

Prayer Points

  • Pray for affordable housing for the homeless.

  • Pray for the stronghold of addiction and mental illness to be demolished in Jesus' name.

  • Pray that we respond to the homeless with the love and compassion of Jesus, treating them with respect and dignity.

  • Pray for their safety on the streets and that we take the opportunity to present Jesus to them.

    Thursday - Teachers & Students

"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58 CSB

Today's Prayer for Teachers & Students

"Lord, 2020 has been rough on our teachers and our students. We thank you that teachers have risen to the challenge of continuing to educate and love their students despite the discomfort and disruption of a global pandemic. Give teachers and students an extra measure of grace in these extraordinary times and may they draw ever closer to you as the Source of their strength. When they feel unseen, remind them that no moment goes unnoticed. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the gift of learning they share with our children. Bless them, Lord, and may they see even just a glimpse of how their faithfulness will forever impact generations to come. Amen."

Prayer Points

  • Pray that our teachers receive support, respect, and prayers that they would remain strong in the Lord.
  • Pray for all the students who had their senior years and graduation plans disrupted because of the pandemic.
  • Pray for our Adventist education system to come back stronger than before the public health crisis.
  • Pray that every student feels safe, loved, and respected in every one of our Adventist schools.

Friday - The spiritually confused

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34

Today's Prayer for the Spiritually Confused

"Truly, we live at a time when 'truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter. Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey' (Isa. 59:14-15). So many voices and saying so many things, multitudes are confused about You and are giving up. Please cut through the chaos and clammer and let the light of Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, shine in the darkness and lead many to salvation. Amen."

Prayer Points

  • Pray for power from on high to give our message clarity and a certain sound that stands out from the noise around us.
  • Pray that God's sheep hear His voice and come out of confusing ideologies and destructive ways of living.
  • Pray that we not be confused ourselves as to our own spiritual condition, and that we make our calling and election sure.

Sabbath - Wisdom, growth and revival

“…revive us, and we will call on your name. Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.” Psalm 80:18-19

Today's Prayer for Wisdom, Growth & Revival

Lord, your servant told us that "a revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs." (1SM, 121) This, we must have. Unprecedented times call for unprecedented wisdom, unprecedented obedience to your Word, unprecedented humility and repentance, and unprecedented, prevailing prayer. Call us to prayer and unity as never before and may we witness an explosion of spiritual and numerical growth as we proclaim the three angels' messages in latter rain power. Amen.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that our hearts are prepared to receive the revival God wants to send.
  • Pray that our members engage in the work of confession, humiliation, repentance, and earnest prayer necessary to receive the blessings we so desperately need.
  • Pray for the wisdom to know how to minister effectively in Pentecostal power in a world turned upside-down.
  • Pray for an end to the divisions and bitter dissensions that open the door to the adversary and destroy our witness in the world.
